HISTORY OF AOI MUMBAI WEST

ENT and Head Neck surgery as a speciality has existed for more than a century now, however, the speciality has grown exponentially since the late 1980s and has now turned into a niche field with many subspecialties. With growth of the specialty knowledge dissemination and keeping abreast of newer advances became of paramount importance.

MUMBAI’s western suburbs also witnessed an exponential increase in population and correspondingly a steady increase in the number of practising ENT surgeons. This led to the recognition of the need for a branch of AOI (Association of Otolaryngologists of India) specifically catering to ENT and Head and Neck surgeons practicing in the western suburbs of the city.

Subsequently, a group of ENT Surgeons from suburban Mumbai started meeting at Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle West under guidance of Dr. R. M. Shah, Head of ENT Department, Nanavati Hospital to upgrade themselves academically. These meetings were held once in two months for more than two years to discuss difficult cases and recent advances in ENT and related fields.

By the year 2000, a need to have a registered body was felt. This is how AOI MUMBAI WEST BRANCH was formed. In August 2000, AOI MUMBAI WEST BRANCH was formally inaugurated by Padma Bhushan Dr. L. H. Hiranandani, Dr. Sandra D’sa Souza, President of AOI India and Dr. K. B. Bhargava, President of AOI Mumbai Branch were also present.

Most members of AOI MUBAI WEST BRANCH are private practitioners. The very aim of this association has been to provide to our members a platform where they can present their work. Over a period of last 23 years members have learnt how to present papers, to prepare a surgical videos and have developed oratorial skills.

AOI MUMBAI WEST BRANCH is a very vibrant organization. It routinely conducts a number of Seminars, CMEs, Conferences and Surgical Workshops. The Association has won Best Branch Trophy three times given by Federation of Maharashtra State Branches of Association of Otolaryngologists of India.
